William Carlos Williams: Solstice

.

The Night Wind:
Charles Burchfield, 1918 (Museum of Modern Art, New York)

The river is full
The time is ripe
Give murderous thoughts rest

No leaves on the trees
A mild sun darkens

the frosty earth

Quietness reigns
No birds, no wind
The shortest day of the year

is favorable
